What is Low-E glass?

Low-E glass is glass with a low-emissivity coating designed to reduce certain forms of heat transfer while still allowing daylight into the building. The coating may be applied to a glass surface within a single, laminated or insulated build-up. Its practical effect depends on the coating type, glass layers, air space, frame, orientation, shading, climate and how the room is used. Low-E is not a universal guarantee of lower energy bills.

Selection should balance solar heat, visible light, glare, color, reflection, safety, acoustics, condensation risk, thickness, glass weight and budget. A coating that suits a west-facing window may not be the same choice for a shaded north-facing opening or a display facade.

Decision points

  • Owner: Identify rooms with heat or glare concerns and decide how much daylight, view and color neutrality matter.
  • Architect/designer: Coordinate coating position, glass build-up, shading, facade orientation, visual appearance and thermal objectives.
  • Contractor/builder: Confirm the approved glass make-up, labels, edge protection, setting blocks, seals and installation orientation.
